Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to challenge certain rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
