Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors involved, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
