A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
