A group of seven alleged individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist group face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or remain detained.”
